Phase 1: Research, Mapping, & Engagement

Phase 1A: Safety and Access

Status:

  • Community Engagement – Completed – December 2024.

  • Engagement Report Development – In-Progress – January - March 2025.

  • Community Report Engagement – March 2025.

The first phase of community engagement focused on the guiding principles of Safety and Access with the intent to deepen understanding of what personal and cultural safety looks like to Indigenous peoples in a healthcare setting and to understand Indigenous people’s experience with barriers to accessing both mainstream healthcare services and traditional healing practices.


Phase 1B: Space and Culture

Status:

  • Community Engagement – In-Progress – February - March 2025.

  • Engagement Report Development – March - April 2025.

  • Community Report Engagement – April 2025.

The second phase of community engagement will focus on the guiding principles of Space and Culture with the intent to:

  • Define services that best suit the needs of Indigenous community health centers within the Indigenous Health Space;

  • Determine visual concepts and floor plans for the Indigenous Health Space;

  • And to deepen understanding of cultural practices and protocols essential to revitalizing land-based health and healing within a healthcare setting.

Phase 2: Service Planning

Phase 2 will be defined as the recommendations from Phase 1 are completed.

The overall goal is to develop an operational plan for the Indigenous Health Space that includes the recommendations resulting from the community engagement and consultation.

Phase 3: Space Planning & Construction

Phase 3 to be defined as Phase 2 is completed.

The overall goal is to engage with construction contractors and Indigenous space designers to complete the construction of the Indigenous Health Space at Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.

Phase 4: Program & Service Implimentation

Implementation of programs and services at Indigenous Health Space at Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.
